DIY Rainy Day Activity Sticks – Step by step

I ran across some super cute color-coded chore sticks from Embellish. Loved the idea

Supplies:

  • White tin jar
  • Scrapbook paper
  • Wooden craft sticks
  • Spray adhesive
  • Elmer’s glue
  • Embellishments (I used Puffies)
  • Hot glue gun
  • Ribbon
  • Alphabet stickers
  • Print out of 30+ activities

So here’s the step by step instructions…

First thing I did was spray 10 wooden craft sticks to three different colors of paper (30 sticks total) using spray adhesive.

While that was drying I started work on the tin jar. I added some ribbon to the top and bottom using my hot glue gun.

Then I used some scrap paper and the alphabet stickers to label my jar with “Rainy Daze” and added a little embellishment with a Puffie.

Now it’s time to finish the activity sticks that were set aside for drying. I used an exacto knife to trim out the straight sides and a pair of small scissors to cut the rounded edges.

I then created a Word doc of 30 activities and printed it out in a cute font. I trimmed them out and used Elmer’s glue to adhere them to the ends of the activity sticks.

Here are all of the completed activity sticks!

Pretty cute, huh? Yeah, I’m figuring we’ll use these a lot more than just rainy days. When it’s over 100 degrees here, it’s hard to do anything outside! These will work great for winter time activities as well!

Total costs: $14 at Michael’s for the craft sticks, stickers, tin jar and scrapbook paper. I already had the ribbon, but did have to repurchase some spray adhesive since I was out! That cost me another $6. Oh well, I have plenty left for future projects!
.
Also, here is a list of the 30 activities I used!
  • Playdoh
  • Barbies
  • Candyland
  • Chutes & Ladders
  • Glue & Tape
  • Paper Dolls
  • Baby Dolls
  • Watercolors
  • Crayons
  • Paper Bag Puppets
  • Sock Puppets
  • Paint Rocks
  • Build a Fort
  • Watch a Movie
  • Play the Piano
  • Tea Party
  • Dance
  • Play Restaurant
  • Treasure Hunt
  • Bake Something
  • Manicure/Pedicure
  • Look at Photo Albums
  • Dress Up
  • Read Nursery Rhymes
  • Indoor Picnic
  • Play Charades

DIY Flower Vase Out of Plastic Bottle

I would like to show how I made a flower vase out of plastic bottle. This flower vase can be used to keep both artificial and natural flowers. For keeping artificial plants or flowers use pebbles or sand in order to fill the vase and for natural flowers use water. This piece of craft is completely made out of plastic bottles. We use a lid of relatively large container as a base for the flower vase. Use spray paint or painting brush to paint the flower vase.

Required Materials:

1) Plastic bottle

2) Lid of a container

3) Artificial plants or Natural flowers

4) Pebbles

5) Cutting blade

6) Glue gun or any adhesive for plastic bonding

7) Iron box

8) Spray paint or Acrylic paint

Vase:

First of we shall make the vase from the plastic bottles. For that,

1) Take any plastic bottle of desired shape. Decide the required size for your flower vase and select a plastic bottle.

2-3) Cut out the top quarter of the plastic bottle as shown in the image. 4-5) Now using a hot iron box curve the brim of the cut out plastic bottle. Set your iron box to a low temperature and slowly slide the brim of the plastic bottle on the surface of the iron box in a circular motion. 6) Now take a lid of a container. While selecting the lid it should have a size approximately equal to the brim of the bottle so as to get a good shape for the flower vase. 7-8) Apply hot glue at the center of the lid top and fix the bottle head on to the top of the lid as shown in the image.

Painting Vase:

Now we have made a simple flower vase.

1-2) Using a white acrylic spray paint paint the flower vase. Apply a second coat a few minutes after the first coat.

3) Now I have made one more flower vase in the same way. You can try with bottles having different shape and size. 4-5) This time I have planned to give a black acrylic color for the second flower vase. 6-10) Finally, i have made one more flower vase to give a gradient effect on it. For this, the flower vase is lay down and spray painted with black on one side. Thereafter on the other side it’s spray painted white as shown in the image.

Add Plants or Flowers:

Finally, we need to place plants or flowers inside the flower vase. We can keep both artificial and natural plants and flowers in this flower vase.

1-6) For an artificial plant or flower use pebbles or sand in order to fill the vase. I have placed to artificial plants in the black and white flower vases.

7-9) Now, for a natural flower we can fill the vase with water. This could extend the freshness of flower in flower vase. I have placed a bunch of red roses in the flower vase as shown in the image.

Flower Vase:

So we have finished the Flower Vase. It’s a cheap flower vase as it’s a recycled plastic bottle craft. Hope you all enjoyed this tutorial.

DIY Indoor Outdoor Concrete Lamp

This time it had to be easier to make, had to be larger, and with the option of placing it outdoors. After brainstorming here is the attempt of improvement. Check out the video for more details.

Required Material:
1. Led String Light
2. Felts Sheet
3. Cement
4. Large vase ( I used a 24in tall x 7in)
5. Drill bits
6. Random tree branch
7. Spray paint
8. Metal flashing

Making the Storage for Led Controller:

I took a piece of foam from a shipping package. Cut it to create a cylinder. I closed it by taping the side. then cut out a circle to close off one end. A paper cup would work as well.

Creating the Concrete Form:

I used a piece metal flashing to create the concrete form.

First I marked the metal flashing for the bottom of the form, I made this 5 inches tall. Next, I marked 2 inches above the first line. At this point, you will have two parallel line.

Now wrap the metal flashing around the vase. Close the flashing by taping the loose end. By the way, I’m using a large vase that’s 24 inches tall by 7 inches. You can find that at your local craft store.

Next, I took two 1 inch rubber seal and follow the line going around the interior. Following the line I drew out. I did this twice which gave me a two-inch path around the interior of the flashing. This part will shrink the interior, which will make the concrete fit right over.

Mixing the Concrete:

Take a piece of aluminum foil, place it down on a flat surface. Then I trace the vase and then the foam cup as shown. Use hot glue to secure the cup then the flashing to the marking.

Mix concrete and pour it in the form.

After a few days remove the flashing and rubber seal. The bottom was smooth so I only had to sand the top.

Using a Tree Branch:

I took a tree branch and sprayed it with black paint. Allow enough time to dry. Depending on the size of tree branch you chose, use the appropriate size masonry bit. I use a 1/2 inch bit to drill down to the bottom into the foam cup. Test that everything fits nicely.

Install the Light:

Drill a hole in the lower part of the concrete form for the power end to pass through. Next, use hot glue to hold the plug in place.

Pass the Led String light power end down through top then connect to the power cable.

Adding the Lights:

Feed a few feet of the led into the vase. Then place the branch in the vase and feed more led as you proceed.

Now sit the vase on top of the concrete. I placed a felts pad on the bottom to protect any surface.

The Finish:

I love the way this lamp came out. The LED String Lights works extremely well. I was able to get this lamp to work approximately 50 feet away. Hope you have a blast when you make yours.
